On Wednesday 20th May, two talented Year 9 students from Blackpool Aspire Academy took part in the annual “Blackpool Sings Pop” singing competition, proudly hosted by Blackpool Music Service. This popular event brought together a wide range of young vocalists from across the area, with a total of 20 primary school children and nine secondary school students competing for top honours.
Among the secondary performers was our very own Lacey, who gave a stunning rendition of Billie Eilish’s The Greatest. Her performance earned her a well-deserved second place in the competition, an impressive achievement considering the high level of talent on display. Lacey’s stage presence, vocal control, and emotional delivery captivated both the audience and the judges, marking her as a standout performer of the evening.
A huge congratulations also goes to Rhiannon, who delivered her very first solo public performance on the night. Despite it being her debut, she demonstrated fantastic courage and composure on stage, showcasing a mature confidence and potential to greater things. Both girls were exceptional representatives of Blackpool Aspire Academy, and their involvement in the competition highlights the depth of musical talent developing within our school.
“Blackpool Sings Pop” – the new name for the annual singing competition – has continued to grow in popularity and prestige, and this year’s event was one of the most successful to date. Hosted at Montgomery Academy, the evening featured 31 young performers aged between 8 and 18, who had all been selected by their schools after a highly competitive audition process. Each student earned their place through dedication and talent, having beaten out numerous hopefuls within their own schools.
The standard of performance was incredibly high across all age groups. From powerful ballads to contemporary pop hits, the evening was filled with memorable moments that celebrated the joy and skill of young singers. The adjudicators, Ged Mills and Chrissie Mason, were full of praise for the performers, noting the professionalism, vocal ability, and confidence shown by everyone who took to the stage.
“Blackpool Sings Pop” continues to be a wonderful celebration of musical talent within our community. Events like this not only give students a platform to showcase their skills but also help to build confidence, foster friendships, and inspire future performers. We are incredibly proud of Lacey and Rhiannon for representing our academy so brilliantly, and we look forward to seeing what they, and all our other young musicians, will achieve next.
